The Mombasa EPZ management has denied allegations of sacking over 2,000 workers because they wanted to form a workers union.
Speaking while he appeared before the Mombasa County Assembly Committee in charge of solving the dispute on Tuesday, the company’s Financial Controller Mr Pankaj Mehta, said the workers were relieved of their duties because their contract had ended.
"The contract ran from January to June and was renewed up to December, when it ended. There is no law prohibiting me from ending a contract," said Mr Mehta.
The workers who were present during the meeting disputed the claims saying when they reported to work, they were asked to choose between the union and work.
The committee chairperson, who is also the Timbwani Ward MCA Tom Ogallo, said they had not been able to successfully solve the matter, as they were still conducting more investigations.
He said they had asked the company’s management to provide more documents that would aid in the investigation.
Nominated MCA Mary Akinyi who is part of the committee, said they plan to conduct investigations on other EPZ companies in the region.
