The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ruling on Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has been received with joy by Cord supporters at the coastal city of Mombasa.
The supporters sung songs praising the senator who had been embroiled in a tough battle to save his political career, following a directive by the Supreme Court that the electoral body deliberates on the way forward for the Cord co-principal over voter bribery allegations levied against him.
Speaking to this writer on Monday, the supporters said it was an emotional moment for them bearing in mind that anything short of a favorable ruling could have plunged the coalition to some kind of crisis.
When the commission ruled that it had no reason to delete Wetangula's name from the voters' register over voter bribery allegations, the supporters celebrated the ruling terming it as a victory for the opposition.
“The perpetrators of impunity must now know that justice has been served and should be prepared for a tough political battle in 2017. The enemies of the opposition should be ashamed, as their fight has backfired,” said Dennis Wafula, a resident of Mtwapa.
Philip Moseti, a Mtwapa resident, showered the commission with praises.
“This is now the justice that we have been crying for. We thank the commission for such a landmark ruling and we believe they are going to deliver come 2017,” said Moseti.
Suleiman Omar who resides in Likoni thanked the tribunal and challenged the commission to remain independent in a bid to retain the trust and confidence of the electorate.
