Youth leaders in Mombasa have urged residents in the county to turn up in large numbers to register as voters.

This comes amid complains from a section of residents who say they have not been issued with identity cards, despite having applied for the documents several months ago.

Likoni Youth Group leadership has appealed to youth from the area to get registered as voters, in a bid to ensure they take part in the 2017 electoral process, as it is their constitutional right.

Speaking to this writer on Friday, Iddi Abdulrahman, one of the group's officials, said the youth have no choice other than to ensure that they register as voters.

“Youth have the tendency to be reluctant when it comes to these matters. However, they must know that this is the only opportunity they have to choose the right leaders, so we are requesting that they register as voters,” said Mr Abdulrahman.

Speaking to journalists in his office, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho also appealed to youth to get registered as voters in order to fully participate in democratic matters.
