As the fight against female genital mutilation continues in the country, residents in Nakuru County have been advised to join hands and help end the vice.
Nakuru woman representative Mary Mbugua Tuesday stated that FGM is an vice that happens in the neighbourhoods without the knowledge of people and is often subjected to little girls who cannot defend themselves.
“It is an act that happens even in our neighbourhoods without our knowledge and we should unite in war against it because it is a violation of human rights,” said the MP.
She emphasized that it is a tradition that has been phased out with time.
“This is a practice that should not be done in the 21st century because for those who understand, it has dire medical consequences and it is a violation of human rights,” she stated.
She explained that FGM is a form of discrimination on girls and women, and it not only does it violate their rights but also their security and health.
Mbugua urged residents of Nakuru to report such cases to the authorities to save the girl child from torture and a life of misery.
