Muhoroni MP Onyango Koyoo has asked stakeholders in Kisumu county to ensure that all students get quality education.

Koyoo said education greatly contributes to a nation’s growth and development.

The MP said strong foundation in education helps develop character and career prospects among students.

He asked Education CS Dr Fred Matiang’i to ensure more students get an opportunity to access learning institutions by maintaining quality standards.

Koyoo also urged students and young graduates to be more innovative and endeavour to create jobs.

He reiterated the need for quality assurance in education in Kenya to enable the graduates meet the global market.

Koyoo said in realising quality assurance, learning institutions need to adopt all possible ways of assessing their students and invest more to realise quality assurance.

“Institutions need to invest in strong quality culture aimed at their institutional mission. Academic quality needs to be based on genuine self-regulation, with internal and external feedback,” he said.

"There are many private and transnational education institutions coming up, with employers complaining that they are producing incompetent graduates," Koyoo said.

He challenged teachers to focus on producing quality students. The MP said that poor training of teachers lowers the quality of education delivered.

Koyoo advised that initial training should cover skills for teaching students with different disabilities and lay the foundation for further training.

"The government should apply the Child-Friendly Schools (CFS) concept to improve learning environments," he said.

He added that the government needs to ensure continuous teacher development and strengthen oversight institutions.

“The state should be focused on accelerating teacher quality improvement, balancing skills and knowledge based education, and constructing compelling cases for target national education investment,” Koyoo said.

He spoke during national and universities students CDF-sponsored retreat at Chemelil on Friday. Koyoo said 600 students in Muhoroni constituency are beneficiaries of school fees bursaries.

He said students taking engineering, medical and architecture courses are also beneficiaries to encourage more students to enrol for the courses.
