Muslims in Kisumu have raised concern over what they termed discrimination against their children in schools.

The complaint arose during a meeting between Muslim leaders and Governor Jack Ranguma on Friday.

During the meeting, nominated MCA Farida Salim said many Muslim students were going through challenges in learning institutions.

She claimed Muslim students were not allowed to worship in school.

“This include difficulty in wearing the Hijab, observing the mandatory five daily prayers, Friday prayers, Eid Mubarak and fasting,” said Ms Salim.

She said many schools do not allow Muslim students to observe these fundamental pillars of Islam.

The nominated MCA also alleged that Muslim students are victims of stereotyping.

The students also face a challenge in acquiring national ID cards, she claimed.

“The students have to change their names to enable them get the IDs and some have opted for citizenship in other countries,” said Ms Salim.

While admitting that the issues are weighty and cannot be solved once, Ranguma promised to do all he can to solve the issues.

“I promise to uphold the constitution which prohibits discrimination and guarantees freedom of worship,” said Ranguma.
