Nacada chairman John Mututho has proposed a death penalty for manufacturers of illicit brews.
Mututho said the only way to stop the resurgence of the brews was to ensure that they were “stopped for life.”
The Nacada boss is also attempting to have the brewers and the Kenya Bureau of Standards label their drinks as poison including the poison symbol.
“We have lost more people to illicit brews than HIV/Aids or cancer. Clearly, this is the newest form of assisted suicide. They are quickly destroying the stabilities of families and unfortunately at a very fast rate. This needs to be stopped,” he added.
Mututho added that there have been more than 2,000 deaths from illicit brews and yet no one had been brought to account.
Speaking to the press in Nakuru on Sunday, Mututho pointed out that the brewers also need to compensate all the families who have lost their relatives to illicit alcohol with at least Sh1 million.
“Nothing can be compared to the losing of your child and the fact that they are walking scot free is very worrying,” said Mututho.
He lamented the resurgence of illicit brews in the country.
“On Thursday, two people died after drinking illicit liquor. One died in Naivasha while undergoing treatment when another one died in Kuresoi. This has to stop,” he added.
He challenged the local administration to work with locals, saying they were well aware of where the brewing was taking place.
“They are the ones who can be able to pinpoint well where the drinks are made and who is behind their sales. In fact they are the ones who can help bring the brewers to book,” he added.
Mututho pointed out Kiandege area in Naivasha, Rhonda, Kaptwembwa and Barut as a major brewing zones.
“We also challenge the legislators in the area to continue with the exercise of destroying the illicit brews,” he added.
