Farmers across Nakuru county have been urged to practice agro-forestry in order to protect soil from being swept away by floods during heavy rainfalls.
Speaking during a church service in Gigil area, the agricultural officer Harrison Maina said that most farmers have no trees in their farms, a fact that has contributed to the washing away of top soil in their farms hence lowering the productivity of their land.
"Most farmers don't have trees in their farms and this continues to lower the productivity of their farms due to soil erosion," said Maina.
"The best farmer must plant trees and fodder along the ridges and other crops that will keep the soil from being washed away during heavy rainfall," he added.
Maina also urged farmers to do soil sampling before they decided on the fertiliser to be used in their farms saying that some farmers have destroyed their soil by using acidic fertilisers instead of manure.
