The Nakuru County Government intends to poison more than 1000 stray dogs in the area following fears of a rabies outbreak

Chief Public Health Officer Samuel Kingori said that they would start the exercise this week in bid to control the animals which have been on the increase in the county.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Kingori confirmed that they had enough poison to kill all the stray dogs in the area which have been attacking school going children.

“We are appealing to all residents to take their dogs for vaccine and keep them locked up to prevent them from being killed,” he said.

This comes after protests by Kuresoi residents following dog attacks in their area.

On Monday, a victim of a dog bite was buried in Kuresoi area amidst protest by residents.

“We cannot even be able to access drug as the cheapest cost at least Sh 5000. The nearest facility to get such treatment is in Tenwek District Hosptial which is almost 100 kilometers away,” said Benard Waweru, a resident.

NACADA chairman John Mututho called for the annual killing of the dogs.

“On average at least nine people are bitten by a dog in Kuresoi and Molo area and there might be a serious outbreak of rabies if we do not control them the way we used to do before,” Mututho said.
