Nakuru motorists have been cautioned against driving under the influence of alcohol as they risk facing punitive measures.

This, according to Grassland police boss Nickson Waweru, says the matter had become an issue of concern especially along the major highway , a trend he attributes to the numerous accidents being reported on a daily basis.

Speaking at an accident scene on Sunday where an allegedly drunk driver veered off the road before rolling, Waweru said the rate at which drivers especially youthful drivers were freely driving while drunk was worrying.

"Time has come for drivers to adhere to traffic rules because anything less than that is a real threat to other lives using the same road. Drunk driving is a real issue on our roads," he said.

He also called on motorcycle operators to adhere to  traffic rules saying  a majority are just ignorant to basic rules.

"Young boda boda operators never learn from their peers, to them; overloading, dangerous driving, not wearing helmets and reflector jackets is the order of the day. We need to educate them before our young generation perishes," he added.

The car was towed to Grassland police station while the driver was expected to appear in court on Monday to face drunk driving charges.
