Nakuru police boss Musa Kongoli Friday warned the public against exposing themselves at petrol spillage scenes in attempt to draw fuel, saying it jeopardises their lives.

Speaking at Nakuru’s Rhonda Estate where thousands of liters of petrol fuel spilt from a Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), Kongoli strongly condemned those who stormed the scene trying to tap fuel.

"We have seen several incidences of oil spillage across the country where people run to tap free oil despite the risk of fire explosion. I therefore urge members of the public to avoid such scenes where inflammable liquids are involved to prevent loss of lives," Kongoli said.

Area MP Samuel Arama who was among the first people to arrive at the scene confirmed that the accident was caused by a grader that was working on one of the roads funded under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Program (KISIP)

"We are happy that the police were quick to reach the area to control the crowds and more spillage. Without their quick intervention then it would have been difficult to control the spillage," Arama stated.

Kongoli also added that the police were carrying out investigations on the matter and also thanked members of the public for alerting the police in time.
