With the ever rising inflation in the country, life is becoming unbearable.

To make ends meet, many people, especially the youth, are forced to eke out a living from jobs which if they had an option, they would have never ventured into.

But gone are the days when one had numerous opportunities to choose from, nowadays, there are scarily so rare.

In Nakuru, desperate youth in need of jobs have learnt the hard way that to put food on the table, you must not be choosy.

Save for a few lazy bones, many are trying all means known to escape the pangs of poverty.

It is just recently when the media highlighted the plight of Bahati youth who had not acquired national identification cards for having disfigured their fingerprints due to working in quarries.

Thanks to bicycles, many youth in Nakuru are earning an income.

Bicycle bodaboda operators are in their numbers in most Nakuru town roads, especially the downtown streets.

Mark you the job is no easy.

“To succeed you must endure and be ready to sweat, profusely for that matter,” says Mike Tosh, who is in the business.

With the sweltering heat from the sun that is affecting Nakuru currently, and carrying a person weighing above eight kilos even in a slightly steep road, the energy to keep the bicycle moving is no mean feat.

You probably might have come across such an incident and all you did was to sympathize with the gentleman who was putting all the effort to take his client to his/her destination or else he does not get the pay.

“I can’t tell my customer to walk no matter the steepness of the road. I have gotten used to riding even in demanding circumstances,” says a happy Mike who doubtlessly loves his job.

A day in a life of the operators is one that is demanding and with lots of risks, especially from motorists who regard them as nuisances.

County workers have also wreaked havoc in the business by arresting them all in name of decongesting the town.

Nevertheless, life continues for these hard working youths.
