The last time David Wathiai played rugby was almost 20 years ago when he was still a student at Menengai High School.
He was in form four them but a tackle from a form one student left him so embarrassed he decided not to play again.
His love for the game has however persisted. He is considered by many as Nakuru’s greatest rugby fan. His team is the Nakuru-based Top Fry Nakuru Rugby Club better known as Wanyore.
“Rugby is in my blood. I have never missed a game at Nakuru Athletics Club and my support for Wanyore is fanatic,” says Wathiai who works at the Nakuru County land rates office.
Wathiai is the chairman of Wanyore Fanatics. This is a group of diehard rugby fans who go all the way to support the Wanyore in all ways; materially and morally. Most of the photos on his social media platforms also portray a person with a great attachment to rugby.
“We are always there or our team. We cheer them during games and whenever we can, we accompany the team wherever they are playing within the country. Even Menengai Oil the company that sponsors the team recognizes us,” says Champion Wathiai as his friends call him.
Wathiai is also a great supporter of the Rugby under 14s team that meets at NAC grounds every Sunday.
“These are the future of Nakuru Rugby and I support them we an eye to the future of Nakuru’s continued reign in Rugby,” concludes Wathiai.
