The National Construction Authority (NCA) has extended its operations to interior parts of Nyamira, putting at least 20 contractors on notice to comply with its regulations.
The team led by National Assistant Inspection Manager Peter Muthee Wednesday toured Nyansiongo and Chepilat Townships and issued a stern warning to rogue contractors who were given two weeks to comply with the authority's regulations and submit documents justifying their qualification.
An angry Muthee said he was shocked that at least 80 per cent of the houses that were under construction in the region we being done by people who had little knowledge on matters construction.
“We are touring all parts of the country and today, I am quite astonished that houses are being constructed by substandard contractors. We have banned a few of them and gave a number an ultimatum of two weeks to comply by getting approval from relevant bodies,” he said.
Muthee also said many casual labourers were subjected to a number of risks, with most of them working without head gears, contrary to the requirements.
“Apart from missing the approval from NCA, I am also shocked that casual laborers are working without safety gears. This is unacceptable and those sites we discovered the anomalies will remain closed until all that is rectified,” he added.
He said his team will continue with the crackdown in the region and threatened blacklisting companies that will fail to comply with the regulations.
“Let them be sure that we will come here over and over again. We want to see them (contractors) complying with the law. Otherwise, we will blacklist those who may not have fulfilled all the conditions including protection of their casual laborers,” he added.
