As technology is well welcomed in Kenya, many people have used it for broadcasting their hate speech. Many of the cases are not reported. A few reported cases can only be a person talking ill about a public figure.
The interior CS, Joseph Nkaissery has urged all those who spread hate speech through social media to stop or he will not treat the crime softly. He has also asked all county commissioners and county police commanders to arrest politicians who spread hate speech. He warned politicians against inciting people ahead of the 2017 elections.
Speaking at the Kenya School of Government on Thursday, he addressed county commissioners, regional coordinators and police commanders never to shield those politicians who spread hate speech and incite the public in doing wrong. He spoke during a one-day workshop on how to address the threats that face the country. He said he will fight the spread of hate speech through social media to the end.
Among those in attendance were the CID director Ndegwa Muhoro, interior PS, Karanja Kibicho and the inspector general of police, Joseph Boinnet.
Some of the people who have been reported to use hate speech are Moses Kuria and some other bloggers.
