Nominated Members of the County assembly of Kisumu are now accusing their elected counterparts of frustrating their efforts to deliver to the people they represent in the house.

The assembly members who were nominated to represent minority groups such as women, persons with disabilities and other minority groups in Kisumu, are now saying they are not getting enough support from their elected counterparts.

Nominated MCA Aslam Khan who represents minority group said many times when they propose some things in the assembly or do things to help the people they represent in their wards, their elected counterparts feel like they are competing them.

He stated that on many occasions in the house nominated MCAs are threatened to vote in a particular way especially when it is a party issue.

“We have even been denied chairmanship in all the house committees simply because we were not elected,” said Khan.

He stated that they have also been denied funds to have their own offices or ward bursaries that they can use to help those they represent.

The nominated women MCAs also said some people just want them to act as flower girls who are there to follow instructions.

“We were nominated because of our hard work and therefore should not be regarded as ‘mere flower girls’ in the assembly,” said Caroline Ogot.

She however stated that irrespective of the challenges, they have worked as a team to support bills and motions touching on women, youth and children.
