National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials on Tuesday launched a crackdown on reckless motorists along Mbaraki road in Mombasa.
Speaking to this writer, one of the NTSA officials overseeing the operation, said the aim of the exercise is to get rid of rogue drivers who put the lives of other road-users at risk.
Michael Murimi, an NTSA official, said that the exercise is going on well and he expects their efforts to yield fruits as the government steps up its effort in restoring sanity on the roads.
“We want to ensure that all road users feel secure and do away with the culture of carelessness and negligence by a section of motorists who think they are the most powerful group on our roads,” he said.
Murimi said the exercise will mainly target Public Service Vehicles (PSV) drivers who have in the past been blamed for majority of the accidents that occur on our roads.
However, majority of the drivers who were nabbed during the crackdown claimed that the operation was biased.
“This exercise is not being conducted sincerely. I have raised my concerns with the official as I do not know why I have been arrested,” said Joseph Musyoka, a driver.
