National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has started a crackdown on all road unworthy vehicles to reduce accidents.
The authority has warned that those found driving such vehicles will be arrested and their driving licences seized.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Tuesday, the deputy director of safety strategies and county committee Dancan Kibongong said road unworthy vehicles contribute forty per cent of all accidents in Kenya.
"I give a stern warning to all motorists driving road unworthy vehicles that they will be arrested and prosecuted since they are putting the lives of their passengers in danger," he said.
He said NTSA officials will be keen especially during the festive season to arrest motorists violating traffic rules.
"Anyone violating 'Michuki laws' by carrying excess passengers and not putting on safety belts will face the law," he said.
He also said driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding are the main causes of accidents in Kenya.
