Bright students from various secondary schools in Nyamira will have their school fee paid by the county government, County Governor John Nyagarama has said.
The Nyamira county boss took a break from his busy schedule to visit top performing schools on Friday in the region among them Nyambaria Boys and Mochenwa secondary school.
He said the county government is keen to give bright students bursaries to avoid scenarios in which a number of them are sent home.
“My government will not sit back and watch our bright children sent home to collect fees. They have to stay in class because education is the best asset we have as a community. We have county bursaries and my officers will be identifying needy students for support,” Nyagarama said.
He cautioned head teachers against sending the children home and urged them to liaise with the department of education in the county to seek support.
“The county government may not identify all needy cases and this doesn’t mean that children are sent home. It’s important that the school heads liaises with us to get the little support so that the students stay in school,” added Mr Nyagarama.
Nyagarama also urged teachers to remain in school during officials’ hours and challenged the ministry of education to deal with cases of absenteeism.
“I know education isn’t devolved but as local leaders we have a role to play. Even as we support these children, then teachers must also remain dedicated to their work. We want to see cases of absenteeism reduced,” reckoned the county boss.
