Farmers of Nyamira county and its environs have been advised to embrace poultry farming as apart from having the potential of being profitable, it also cushioned people against lifestyle diseases that were expensive to treat.
While speaking to this Hivisasa writer on Wednesday, the Nyamira agricultural officer Mr. Julius Nyabera said that throughout the years, poultry farming had grown to become the most vital livestock sub-sector in most rural households because they adapt well to local and harsh climatic conditions.
Mr. Nyabera however noted that most farmers keep the chicken using the free range system where they allow them to move around freely during the day but sheltered at night as they found it convenient.
This rudimentary poultry farming format, she said, was not economical and should be improved if they ever plan to adopt a commercial aspect.
The officer lamented that most farmers have neglected chicken rearing while those rearing the domestic fowls provide little to no supplementary feeds which make them to suffer from nutrients deficiency.
He advised the residents to put in place strategies and technological innovations so as to increase their income and uplift their living standards if they expected to earn good returns.
“All farmers that are looking into this kind of farming will get our support because as the government we want to ensure farmers to earn more and empower themselves economically,” he added.
