Parents in Nyamira County who will be found marrying off their under aged girls now risk a jail term for up to 15 years.
According to Nyamira County Children Officer Naftal Okero, there has been a tendency whereby parents allow their school going children to get married and accepting the offer in the current times.
Okero noted that parents who interrupt their daughters' learning process contravene the Children Act that gives the government powers to prosecute such parents.
The officer added that a survey by his departments established that the retention rate of girls has dropped significantly in almost all schools, a factor attributed to early marriages among school girls.
“We are currently in touch with area administrators, and once we get to know those involved will be arrested and arraigned in court immediately,” he added.
He called upon parents in the county to ensure that all children get quality education for that will see the county have its development agenda implemented at ease.
Okero was speaking at a consultative meeting that was on Monday morning at a Nyamira hotel.
