A local human rights group in Nyamira has commenced a one-month exercise that will see them reach parents across the country to rally against child labour.
The Nyansiongo based-One Unity Group rolled out the programme at Amakara village and they are expecting to reach all the 20 wards in the region to inform the society about the importance of investing in education among children from the region.
The group’s CEO, Charity Magangi, said the group was particularly concerned with increasing number of children hired as either house helps or herd boys and some other towns recording highest number of underage children working with construction firms.
“This group is particularly concerned with reported cases of children being subjected to child labor in our county. We are aware of a number of children being hire as house helps and others as herders. Still we have some of them working as casual laborers at construction sites and that is wrong,” she said
Mrs Magangi urged parents to take prime responsibility in ensuring their children got the best out of the free primary and subsidize secondary education.
“Education has been made affordable by the government and we expect parents to take a prime responsibility in ensuring children make good use of the offer,” she added.
She said the group will be also been engaging in rescuing mission and urged the culprits to surrender children who have been subjected to child labor before the law catches up with them.
“We are giving civic education to locals on how they can get the best out of their children other than allowing them to be misused because of abject poverty. My group will also be keen to rescue a number of them and send them to school,” she said.
