Residents of Nyamira south Sub County have been urged to plant trees along the boundaries of their farms to reverse the diminishing forest cover in the area.
The Sub-county Deputy Commissioner Justus Manoti, who was addressing the public at Ramba and Makairo locations respectively, early Monday expressed concern that the tree cover in the hills had declined due to harvesting of trees.
“You can grow several trees on the edges of your farms to improve the environment of the area, which is a major water tower in the county and also earn you money on maturity,” he said.
He urged the residents to take advantage of the readily available market for timber.
Manoti lamented that the county was currently importing timber from a neighbouring county yet there was a great potential of growing trees in the area.
The Deputy Commissioner further urged county residents to embrace peace to woo investors and tourists to the county.
“Farmers are losing a lot of money by selling produce at farm price whereas if they added value and branded the same products, they would attract better prices,” he said.
He noted that individuals may lack the capital to start small-scale manufacturing firms but they can pool resources together by forming associations.
