Veteran politicians from Nyamira County are set to have difficult moments in challenging for elective seats after a section of youths launched a campaign to groom youthful leaders to vie for the posts.
The group dubbed “Vijana na Uongozi” under the leadership of American based John Motari has embarked on a series of sensitisation campaigns across the county and is aiming to have more youths register as voters ahead of 2017.
Motari who chaired the Wednesday meeting in Chepilat said youths had been taken for granted by senior politicians and said they were ready to use their numbers to bring change in county politics.
“We have been treated as minors for a long time and we thought it wise to come together and sensitise our youths. We may not be the only group championing for youth leadership but I must confess that we will use our numbers to bring the lasting change in our county,” he said.
His counterpart James Mokaya accused area politicians for sidelining youths in matters development and questioned the commitment of the county government in awarding tenders and jobs to youths.
“Our leaders have never been sincere with us and as youths we want to show them that we can no longer play second fiddle in matters leadership. We have seen the young generation discriminated in awarding of county tenders and in employment and this is what motivates us to rally for unity among us,” he said.
They vowed to field youthful leaders in every elective seat in 2017 elections and maintained that the move will see a number of them clinch various seats.
“It’s all about unity and we have achieved that because this team represents every corner. We will field youthful candidates and use our numbers to send these old people packing. We are not ready to embrace their endless promises,” Mokaya added.
