Youths from Nyamira County have been urged to rally against politics of clanism.

Speaking at his Nyamusi backyard on Sunday, County Assembly Speaker Joash Nyamoko challenged youths to fight clanism by rallying against it in both social political gatherings.

Nyamoko said the narrative behind the clanism politics was likely to hinder development within the county by inciting clans against each other.

He cited Somalia as an example of a nation that has been in war for many years due to politics based on clans.

“We ushered in a new constitution by introducing the devolved units. I have been observing the trend of our local politics and I have seen a number of politicians campaigning on the platform of clans. As youths, you have an obligation to rally against that retrogressive and primitive thinking that is likely to jeopardise development at grassroots,” he said.

He said youths carry heavy responsibility in defining the future of Kenyans politics but that would happen if they stood up and spoke vehemently against tribalism and clanism.

“The future of our nation should be defined by the young politicians. That can only happen if you step up and challenge the status quo. We don’t want things especially in political arena to be done the way they were done before independence. This is the time to wage intellectual war against clan and tribal cocoons,” he added.

He urged youths who constitute majority of the population to choose leaders who are development oriented regardless of their clans rather than those who are out to disintegrate communities.
