Outgoing Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya is expected to seek a political office in Gusiiland, following Wednesday’s announcement that he was quitting football to ‘serve the country in another capacity’.
After two decades of football management, Nyamweya was in the race for re-election when he unexpectedly withdrew from the race, after long consultations with family and close friends.
“I have made this decision out of love for the game, the passion and appreciation that no good leader should be pushed to give up power and that, while I may still possess the energy and drive to lead FKF, there may be other with fresh vigour and charisma to take over,” Nyamweya said in a prepared statement.
Businessman Nick Mwendwa, 37, garnered 50 votes and was elected the FKF chairman.
There is now speculation that Nyamweya may go for the gubernatorial seat in Gusiiland after about 20 years in football.
He first entered national football management in 1996 as the secretary general of FKF.
