Kisumu Senator Prof Anyang Nyong’o has faulted Governor Jack Ranguma over what he termed failure to constitute a city board.
Nyong’o, who was speaking at Sovereign Hotel in Kisumu said failure to form a city board was hurting Kisumu and hampering development and management of resources.
He stated that it was now three years after Mr Ranguma came into office yet he had not formed the board and had no city manager with the only one there being Doris Ombara who is on an acting capacity.
“Failure to form the city board puts the city manager in a corner as she cannot exist without a board. This has made many services to stall in the county.
The former mayor of Kisumu and currently Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir said when the Urban and Cities Act was enacted, Kisumu automatically became a city and therefore need to urgently form a city board so that the city can grow.
Shabbir has also raised the issue saying failure to form a city board will lead to gobbling up of the revenue from the city due to lack of proper systems.
“It is sad that Kisumu used to collect more than a million shillings per day, yet it can barely manage a quarter of this,” said Shabbir.
There have been allegations that the governor is against the establishment of a city board as it will create a parallel centre of power within the city.
Attempts to get comment from the governor's office were futile as all calls made to the county government communications office went unanswered.
