The National Youth Service slum upgrading programme in Kibera which has received both praise and criticism, has had some positive impacts on the lives of many Kibera residents.

Despite the government suspending the exercise, there are, however, some residents who have hailed the initiative.

Millicent Achieng', said the initiative transformed her life.

She feels that had it not for the project, her life could even be more miserable.

The 27-year-old expressed her gratitude to the government for the project.

She said before the project begun, she could go for days without food because she was jobless and had none to rely on.

However, the launch of the project proved to be the turning point in her life.

She narrated how she used the money from the project prudently to better her life.

For the months she worked there, she saved more then Sh12,000 which she used to open a grocery shop which has proved successful.

"My life is now better and I am not complaining. I never thought that one day I will be this comfortable in life. I cannot say I am much better off, but I am comfortable,"she said.

She said her business which she opened courtesy of the money from the project, is doing well.

Lucy Akinyi, who also took part in the project, shared the same message.

"I sell second-hand clothes and I am better now," she said.
