Over 100 girls who were set to undergo Female Genital Mutilation have been rescued.

The girls are undergoing a ten day alternative rite of passage.

The girls who are aged between 5 and 12 years are at a rescue camp at Nyansanda, courtesy of Vinbel Foundation and Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama’s wife Naomi Nyagarama.

Ms Naomi encouraged residents to say no to Female Genital Mutilation as it was a violation of the girls’ rights.

"We have to say no FGM to our beautiful daughters, and if you suspect any case of the do not hesitate to report to the police," said Naomi.

Vinbel Foundation Director Isabella Ongera said the girls will spend two weeks at the camp and will be taken through lessons on FGM, self-esteem, female hygiene and team building.

Naomi encouraged parents to bring in more girls for such meetings.

A trainer, Keziah Oseko said the program will enable the girls appreciate themselves and not allow their weaknesses define them.
