Over 1,200 children from Mataara sub location, Kiambu County have so far been vaccinated against polio disease.
According to George Wainaina, a health administrator in Mataara, 300 of the children immunized on Monday were receiving the vaccine for the first time.
The exercise that took place at Mataara Shopping Centre, Muchakai, Karangari, Chania, Mutugu and Gichagi village saw the vaccinating officers work until 6pm to serve the huge number that yearned for the vaccine.
Wainaina commended parents in the six villages for availing their children for the vaccination, saying that children over five years in far flung areas were identified and given the dose.
"We are now planning to move the exercise to Gituamba area where we expect to vaccinate children from Gatunguru, Kairi, Kairu, Mariaini and Ngandari. I am urging parents in those areas to emulate Mataara area parents by availing their children for the noble course," he said.
"Our health workers who did door to door campaigns faced some challenges like the heavy downpour during the evening, dog bites and a few cases of resistance from the parents who did not want their children to be immunized," he revealed.
The health administrator indicated that out of the six villages, Muchakai had the highest number of children immunized, followed by Mutugu and Mataara respectively.
Wainaina who was speaking at Mataara on Tuesday thanked the national government for facilitating the program which he said will help in preventing diseases among children.
