The government recently resumed issuance of national identity cards in Mombasa after the systems in Huduma Centre were upgraded.

However, the number of IDs lying uncollected is still increasing.

According to the Ministry of Interior and National Co-ordination, Coast region has 27,469 uncollected cards.

Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said there is a total of 375,963 uncollected identity cards countrywide.

Mr Kibicho said most people have been complaining through an SMS and Whatsapp network which he had launched, saying they don’t get there national cards on time.

“Since we opened the SMS and Whatsapp network, many people have complained over the delay in issuance of identification cards,” said Kibicho.

He added: “We will ensure that every Kenyan who applies for an Identity card gets them on time. We however urge those who have applied to check at the centres because they have been processed and are lying at the centres.”

In Mombasa County, a technical hitch on the systems led to the delay in issuance of identity cards.

There was however a successful system upgrade and maintenance and issuance of national identity cards has resumed at Huduma centre.

According to the ministry, Rift Valley has the highest number of uncollected IDs at 81,243 followed by Central at 54,467 while those that remain uncollected at Huduma Centres are 57,583.
