Over to 700 people registered to acquire ID and voters' cards in a massive recruitment drive in South West Kisumu Ward on Wednesday.

High school students were among those turned up to acquire the documents in an exercise staged at Kisian by the area MCA Joseph Abiola.

Most residents interviewed said they were happy to be registered and be able to participate in the coming general election.

Erick Odhiambo, a student of Ongalo mixed secondary school said that as students they hail the process.

Odhiambo said students want to make a change in 2017 and that is why they have stepped up to take the documents.

“I am happy that come 2017 I will cast my vote and elect a leader of my choice from the area ward representative up to the Presidency,” he said.

Another student Mary Omondi said the exercise was free and that allowed many students to get the documents.

Omondi urged those without the two documents to come out and make applications.

“I want to thank my MCA for coming up with such an initiative and I want to appeal to those with ID and voters cards to take up this opportunity and register,” he said.

Abiola on his part urged leaders to come out and support Raila Odinga with the registration of people to boost the number of electorates.

“We have no money to give to Raila for his campaign, the only thing I can do is to mobilise people to register and vote for him in 2017,” he said.

Locals hailed the process noting that it is the only way to ensure Raila ascends to power in 2017.
