The current school fees structure for both primary and secondary schools does not favour the poor.
It affects both the parents who have to struggle to pay the fees and the students who miss classes because of lack of school fees.
It is, therefore, a good move by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, science and technology Fred Matiang'i to include parents in the school fees review process.
The cabinet secretary said he will work with school heads, parents and other stakeholders to review the current fee structure and come up with a realistic fee structure.
The review is scheduled to end in June and the implementation to be rolled out in 2017. This is a very opportune time for parents to air their views and suggest a reasonable amount that they can comfortably pay.
Parents should not shy off to lay open their financial status. Most bright students miss great opportunity to further their studies because of lack of school fees.
