Police in Ahero, Bahati North constituency are on the spot for 'not doing enough' to deal with illicit brews and drugs, especially bhang.

According to the area residents who spoke to this writer, there was a bond being created between the police and young people in the area that was posing a negative impact on police service delivery.

They accused the officers of allowing selected people to engage in crime then go unpunished because of being friends with them.

“Of late, bhang is like cigarette in Ahero. Our officers have miserably failed in executing their duties while our young people are being affected,” said Mzee Mwangi Wa Kineru, the area village elder.

He said the problem was too serious in that those who engage in the criminal activities brag to their peers how untouchable they were.

“They spend most of their time with the officers because their friendship bond has grown to be too strong, they are more like peers,” he added.

Anne Karimi, who owns a food kiosk at the centre noted that the officers who patrol at night only came to collect their tips from some joints them walk away.

“I am at the market up to 9pm daily and what I see is sickening. Illicit brews are still being sold to our youths like nobody cares because our police have converted the dens into cash points where they receive daily tips,” she said.

She called on the concerned authorities to transfer officers that had overstayed at the station to help improve the security situation in the area.Protus Etabale

Area administration police commander Protus Etabale downplayed the accusations saying that his juniors were professionals who were committed to serving the general public’s diligently.

“Our offices are always open but nobody has come to report any complaint so that the necessary disciplinary measures be taken to the said officers. Let them come so that we can deal with the problem once and for all,” he said.
