Police in Nyamira have been backed by the county commissioner following their intervention on the abandoned Nyamira Youth Summit on Sunday, Nyamaiya stadium.

The summit which was meant to bring a number of youth groups from the county was disrupted by goons believed to have been hired by the county government which has since denied the claims.

However, county commissioner Ms Josephine Onunga in an exclusive interview with the reporter on Monday morning on phone defended the police approach and denied that they conspired with the county government to have the summit prevented from taking place.

“I want to laud our police for quick intervention to rescue the situation. In fact, was it not the police, some organizers would have been dead by now because youths had turned against each other, no one should accuse the police of being partisan," she said.

Onunga blamed the event organizers for failing to get police permit in time and warned of such future occurrences.

“They had come to my office seeking the permit to use the Nyamaiya stadium, but I directed them to clear with the county government  because it’s the one that manages the stadium. It’s after that that they should have been given the police permit, but it seems they were not cleared by the county authorities so police have nothing to do with the botched summit,” she added.

She, however, said that her office was keen to investigate the claims by some of the organizers that goons were hired by the county government to cause chaos during the event.

“We care about the security of all and that is why police intervened. We will investigate the claims and counter claims before we give our position as the government on the issue," she said.
