Matatu operators in Thika town and its environs in Kiambu county found themselves on the wrong side of the law after traffic police arrested 47 traffic rules violators on Monday morning.
Thika traffic base commander Mr. William Uhuru has confirmed that the traffic police have orders to impound any vehicle not fit to be on the road.
Speaking to this writer from his office after the crackdown, Mr. Uhuru said that they have also arrested 2 people who were found with a stolen car which was being trailed from Mwea area of Kirinyaga county and luckily fell into the hands of security officers at the point.
“We have impounded 47 vehicles among them a vehicle which had been stolen from Kirinyaga and also arrested the 2 men who were in the car; we will go on with a daily crack down of these vehicles till all our are roads safe,” the officer said.
The motorists who were arrested also were arraigned before the Thika law courts magistrate Abdikadir and released with a fine of 20,000 each or one month imprisonment
The court also ordered the vehicles to be repaired and released to the road after inspection and clearance from the traffic department.
