Nyabondo Boys Primary School in Nyakach sub county has been closed indefinitely after a fire burnt the school’s dormitory on Thursday.
The fire said to have been caused by an electrical fault saw 46 beds and mattresses burnt with 86 students left with nowhere to sleep.
School headteacher George Orwongo said there had been electricity hitches before the fire started at around midday while pupils were in class.
The school lost property worth Sh5 million in the incident.
There were no injuries reported.
It took the area residents hours to contain the fire from spreading into other buildings.
“We could not retain the children here in school because they had lost bedding, books and were also traumatised. We had to call on their parents to pick them until things are sorted out,” he said.
Governor Jack Ranguma visited the school and promised to allocate money to help rebuild the dormitory.
Ranguma regretted the late arrival of the fire engine, promising to improve on the emergency response in the area so as to reduce such loses.
“The loss is big but what we have to do now is find a way of restoring order so that the pupils resume studies,” he said.
