The Principal Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cecily Kariuki has called on the youth from Kiambu County to consider venturing in agriculture.

Kariuki said the sector has not been fully exploited and energetic young men and women should take over from the old and ageing people to revamp the sector.

“Agriculture can fully sustain us if energetic and vibrant people take it as a commercial activity,” she said.

Speaking to the press in Kiambu on Tuesday during a visit to evaluate how various farmers’ groups have benefited from Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP), the PS said farmers should now shift from subsistence farming to commercialization to create employment for themselves and others.

“Let us now focus on increasing our output and selling the surplus as a way of lifting our living standards,” the PS said.

She said the national government has been supporting women and the youth in the country by financing projects in the country.

“We have been empowering farmers countrywide and financing their projects in order to help commercialise agriculture,” she said.

Cecily said the national government will collaborate with the county government to improve the standards of the farmers' produce in the county.
