Countrywide signature collection for the ‘Punguza Mzigo’ referendum campaign being led by Gatundu South lawmaker Moses Kuria will start this week.
The campaign seeks to collect signatures for a referendum to reduce the number of MPs, senators, governors and women representatives.
According to the vocal Gatundu South MP , the exercise will take place in all the 290 constituencies across the country.
While speaking at the Kutus Catholic Church in Kirinyaga on Sunday, Kuria said that coordinators who will help in the exercise have been deployed across the constituencies.
He said that clerks have also been deployed to carry out door to door awareness campaigns on the proposed changes.
The MP said the aim of the proposed changes is to reduce the wage Bill by scrapping some of the positions which he says are over-represented.
Kuria asked MPs to support his proposal saying it is for the good of Kenyans. “I am urging MPs and other leaders to support this matter and let’s discuss it soberly with the interests of Kenyans,” he said.
Kuria wants the number of governors and senators scrapped from 47 to 16. He also wants the number of MPs cut down from 349 to 200.
The Gatundu lawmaker is further proposing that Women Representation seats be scrapped off.
Kuria claims that there are many positions that have led to duplication of roles hence increase in the wage Bill.
