The Kenya Dairy Board has banned hawking of fresh milk and warned those engaging in the outlawed business they will be arrested and prosecuted.
The board's Kisii branch manager David Akung'u issued the stern warning on Thursday evening, and advised the public against consuming fresh milk being hawked in the area as they risk contracting diseases from contaminated milk.
Speaking to this writer in his office, Akung'u disclosed that already, the board has intensified a crackdown on fresh milk hawking in both Kisii and Nyamira counties to protect the public against consuming contaminated milk sold by unscrupulous hawkers.
He said KDB has enlisted the services of the police in the crackdown to ensure all those engaging in the trade are arrested and prosecuted for violating public health rules and regulations to the detriment of the consumers.
"As we speak, the board officers are on the ground intensifying a crackdown on fresh milk hawking in Kisii and Nyamira counties to assure the public of their food safety and security during this Christmas season, a time which unscrupulous traders take advantage of high demand for fresh milk among unsuspecting members of the public, only to sell them contaminated or adulterated fresh milk which endangers their health and their families," stated the Manager
Akung'u challenged residents to be careful with the quality of milk being hawked in the streets during this festive season to avoid consuming adulterated or contaminated milk which will cause them serious health complications.
