The government has been challenged to remunerate teachers well to avoid sinking the education sector in the country.

Speaking on Saturday at Nyakoiba Secondary School in Bomachoge Chache constituency during a fundraising for the SDA churches, the Homabay deputy governor Milton Orata accused the Jubilee government of overlooking teachers' issues at the expense of students countrywide.

"Will people have trust with the judiciary now? How could the court overrule the previous ruling from the supreme court; the most superior court in the land, that awarded teachers a pay rise of 50-60 percent?" questioned Orata.

The court faulted the industrial court through Justice Nduma Nderi for giving teachers the award without making consultations with key stakeholders.

Teachers lost the battle of fighting for a 50-60 percent pay rise when the court of appeal gave a ruling that the increment was untenable while considering the advice of the salaries and remuneration commission, the only body that is mandated to revise salaries for civil and public servants.

The unions of teachers has since vowed to challenge the ruling of the Court of Appeal in the supreme court.
