Residents of Matungulu sub county have been advised to report to the police when they lose their identity cards as they may be used by criminals to commit offences.

Matungulu OCPD Joseph Chesire on Tuesday in Komarock said many people lose their Identification Cards and fail to report for them to be given an abstract.

Mr Chesire said criminals have acquired machines which they use to insert a different photograph on the lost IDs with other details remaining the same.

"Lost Identity Cards should be reported immediately since many criminals use lost IDs to commit crimes leaving the Identification Cards," said Chesire.

“Therefore, once they commit a crime, the owner of the ID is implicated because of the details and if one has not reported the loss, then it becomes difficult to prove that one was not involved in the crime,” he added.

The officer also said the criminals can use the fake IDs to make financial transactions leaving one to pay loans he/she is not aware of.

He concluded by warning residents that having no Identification Card is a crime and one can be prosecuted.
