Kibera residents have been told to report rape cases to the authorities without any fear for action to be taken against the offenders.

According to Kisumu Ndogo village elder Maureen Agola, most of these cases go unreported or if they are reported, little effort is done since there is no evidence because it has been tampered with.

"Some of the people especially the minors fear speaking openly when they are defiled. They keep it to themselves. By doing so, the victim is repeatedly defiled and fears seeking assistance," said Agola.

This comes after a non-governmental organisation, Shinning Hope for Kibera community ( SHOFCO) released a report in May this year indicating that in every 30 minutes, a person is either raped or defiled in the slum.

She said most of these cases are caused by misunderstanding between parents or guardians of the minors.

"You find a couple quarreling every day. This means they cannot even sleep together. With time, one parent can decide to start sleeping with the child," she added.

She has however asked parents to be close to their children who will in turn open up to them about what they are going through.

She said; "If a parent will be friendly to the child, and then there is nothing the child will fear to share."

She has urged children to report any form of sexual assault to their parents or guardians without fear.
