A section of Nakuru residents has raised concerns over money being collected by wardens from people visiting Menengai crater.

The money ranging from Sh50 for students and Sh200 for adult residents is supposedly collected around Milimani estate at a road block mounted as one enters the forest area.

“What is so strange is that there are many people who live beyond that point and you wonder what criteria is used to determine who is going home, visiting friends or going to view the crater,” said Harun Mathenge who lives in Milimani estate.

Julius Koech a regular visitor to the crater is more concerned about the roads.

“That particular road is especially in a very sad state and I suspect the money is just being pocketed instead of being used to improve the lives of people living there or the road leading to the crater,” said Koech.

Strangely, it is said that no receipts are issued after making the payment.

A college students from Nakuru who chose to remain anonymous says he has been there with a group of students on several occasions and although he pays Sh50 for each student, they have never been issued with a receipt.

Also, regular visitors say that if you use the alternative route via Maili Sita, no one asks you to pay the entry fee raising suspicion that the charges being charged are illegal.
