A section of Nakuru residents have hit out on Governor Kinuthia Mbugua for failing to set up an industrial park in Mai Mahiu as promised.

They claimed despite the governor making the promise three years ago both on the main stream and social media platforms, no action has been taken.

The multi-billion industrial park was to be constructed near the Hell's Gate National Park.

Mbugua said money has already been set aside for the project, which, according to him, investors in the county will be given free land as they bring their expertise to the area.

Kinuthia said the ambitious project will create job opportunities to more than 10,000 youths from Naivasha and Nakuru region at large.

Now, residents claim the county boss has neglected the issue.

“There is no proof that such a plan existed and he only talks about it. We need him to keep his word and at least launch the project,” said Pauline Wangari.

Esther Njeri said the project had brought hopes to majority of the youths.

“We should have seen at least allocation of the plots to various companies which had expressed interest and many of them would have been fenced. However, the land remains bare, indicating that it was just a false promise,” she added

A company which had also approached the county for space at the proposed park said they were told to wait until the issue was sorted.

“We were told to wait until they communicate to us and that was three years ago,” said the director who sought anonymity for fears of being intimidated.

But Nakuru Director of Communication Eddy Kimani said the county was still conducting feasibility studies on the land and will soon launch the project.

“It’s an ongoing process that we expect will be completed soon. As a county, we cannot engage with any partners until the whole process is complete,” he said during an interview on the phone.

Kimani added that the exercise had prevented any visible works on the grounds.
