Residents of Nyawita slum in Kisumu city on Monday demonstrated to reject a newly posted assistant chief for the local sub location.

The residents claim that the new officer hails from another sub location in the neighbouring Kisumu East Constituency.

A resident, Moses Oloo said they want a native to be given the job.

“Let the assistant chief come from Nyawita, we will not accept an outsider again to rule us here,” he said.

They claim that the former assistant chief who recently retired hailed from South Nyanza and will not allow another outsider to take the job.

Oloo said their children who were born and bred in Nyawita have been locked out from such positions.

“We have children with better education; they applied for the job and were left out. We will demand answers from those concerned,” he said.

The locals said that it will be very difficult to access the new officer in her home situated far away from the Sub Location.

Samuel Orek, chairman community policing in the area appealed to the government to post a native in the area.

Orek said cases of insecurity have been on the rise in the area and a native officer will be better placed to understand the needs of the locals.
