Residents of Miu Location, Mwala Constituency, have called upon the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in Machakos County to intervene and regulate sand harvesting in the surrounding rivers.
Speaking on Thursday, the residents led by Chief Austin Muthuka and Chief James Nzoka said that the lorries which normally transport sand destroy roads especially during the rainy season rendering them impassable.
The residents said that sand harvesting also destroys the rivers, making them unable to hold water during the dry seasons.
Our rivers dry up during the dry season due to regular sand harvesting. We are asking NEMA to intervene before the satiation gets out of hand,” said Muthuka.
The affected rivers include Thwake River and Miu River located in Kangundo and Kathiani Sub-Counties respectively.
