A section of Limuru town residents have urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to set registration centers at work places, churches and other social places to help many people register.

Speaking to this reporter on Wednesday, the locals said that they might not get the time to register since they spend most of their time at work places.

Maureen Wairumu, a worker with a government agency in Limuru town said that she might not get time to register because of work and other engagements.

She said that it will have been important if IEBC could have some of its registration desks established at work places and churches so that people who fail to register during the normal hour’s register at their work places or even churches.

“I work from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday and on Sundays I do clean and go to church so I feel I might not get that time to visit a registration center,” she said.

Reuben Mwai, a resident in Limuru town said that the voter registration desks should have been established everywhere so that people can be registered in masses.

“The IEBC should have thought of having the voter registration centers even at pubs, market centers, entertainment joints, supermarkets and also universities so that we can have many Kenyans registering,” he suggested.

Mr Mwai said that many people who work from 8am to 5pm every day are likely not to register.

“You cannot count the weekend because that is the time meant for people to rest and I don’t see many people go for registration on weekends,” he said.

On Monday the IEBC launched the nationwide voter registration exercise that targets eight million new voters. The 30 day exercise will be conducted every week day and weekends from 8am to 5pm.

Eligible voters are being encouraged to come out in masses and register in readiness for the 2017 general elections.
