Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire has yet against thrown a jab at the ruling Jubilee Coalition over its alleged intimidation on civil society organisations.
Speaking at Manga Sub-County on Wednesday when he was meeting recently elected ODM grassroots officials, Bosire said civil society organisations were integral in promoting good governance around the world and deserved better treatment.
He said some of the tremendous gains the country has made in the past were directly attributed to civil societies and urged all leaders to desist from undermining their role.
“I have been observing this government keenly and I am sad that they are ever attacking civil societies from all corners.
Recently, they threatened to draft laws that could see their funding regulated and now they are busy inciting Kenyans against the role of civil society.
Those who know the history of this nation can easily conclude that we have achieved some governance related issues due to the groups,” he said.
Bosire who is also the ODM national treasurer said the government was keenly on trying to take the country back to dark days where he says whoever criticised the day’s government was seen as an enemy.
“We are living in an open society and I wonder why government fears the civil society. Unless they want to take the country back to those dark days when one could not question a regime, then they should appreciate the role of civil society. These groups deserve to be respected," he stressed.
He slammed leaders he says are associating some civil groups with opposition CORD and said they were independent entities that could not be interfered with.
“Sometimes I hear some of my colleagues saying the opposition is using the civil society to put the government on its toes. It is not all times that opposition agrees with the civil society groups and we respect their independence,” he added.
