Residents of Mombasa have expressed mixed reactions over Mombasa high court's verdict to sentence two officers, accused of killing a fourteen-year-old girl, into seven-year imprisonment.

A section of residents termed the jail term as a lenient punishment.

They said the killing of Kwekwe Mwandaza, a 14-year-old girl from Kinango, was intentional and the officers deserved a better punishment.

“This is good for the court to give such a landmark ruling but we question that decision. Seven years was lenient for people who committed serious crimes,” said Salim Abdi, a resident of Mvita.

Mr Abdi's sentiment was echoed by Rashid Juma.

“This isn't a very just ruling. It ought to be something more than seven years,” said Mr Juma.

Maxwell Mutinda said justice has been served.

“Better late than never, I feel it is now justice to her family. But we are happy. Seven years isn't bad,” Mutinda said.
